Brion James was born in Brooklyn, New York, USA on
July 17, 1955.
Brion comes from a long family musical background.
His dad is a trumpet player. Brion himself played cello from the
age of eight to 15.
In Brion's own words, this is how he came to play
the guitar:
"One day I was watching the hydrofoil races
in Seattle, Washington, standing about knee high in water watching
the boats go by and I paid no attention to it. Then a six-stringed
acoustic guitar with just three strings on it floated by and I swam
out and got that...!"
"I started to fiddle about with it but I didn't
really like guitar players then, because I was a devout cello player
and strictly classical person. But eventually I put the rest of
the strings on and learned how to tune it. At first, because a cello
is tuned to fifths, I assumed the guitar was too! That could have
been really interesting if I'd left it like that!
"Anyway, I eventually learned how to tune it
properly and it became a whole new ball game."
