Brion James was the guitarist in the Dan Reed Network. His approach displayed a strong ear for a simple melody and his solos were mini-songs in themselves.

With a classical background, and study of guitar theory, it would be easy for Brion to throw the usual guitar shapes and show off his technical wizardry. Although those skills are there, Brion saw himself as a physical guitar player : "I like to play licks that people can sing along with".

And it was sure possible to do that with his melodies in Dan Reed Network songs. Brion's realisation of the tunnel vision shown by most rock guitarists allowed him to stretch his inspiration into the funk of Funkadelic, Parliament, Cameo and Tower of Power. This inspiration is reflected in all of his output with the Dan Reed Network.

Brion's other real talent is as a songwriter. Brion's melodies and hooks are apparent in all of the Network's material.
